CRITICAL ANALYSIS ESSAY
a researched essay and a presentation that explores a topic/issue related to any of the major issues covered in the course: Identity/Ethnicity, Racism, Sexism, Classism, or Power.
Overview: For your researched essay, you will write a 5-7 page paper that explores an issue related to diversity in popular culture. Some sample topic prompts are included below, but you are not limited to these topics. You may propose your own, but you may not write on a topic that has not received instructor approval. All students will submit a topic proposal memo for topic approval. Please use Modern Language Association Standards (MLA), Times New Roman 12-point font.
Sources: You will be required to use at least one primary source and at least four academic secondary sources. Examples of primary sources are movies, music, television shows, literary selections, or works of art. Other primary sources might be acceptable, too, based on the focus of your topic. Secondary sources can be other books, journal articles, major newspaper articles (articles that are too brief may not count), and/or interviews. Utilize academic sources in the library and/or on the Internet. Use of popular encyclopedias exclusively is unacceptable. At least one secondary source needs to focus specifically on cultural aspects, such as sources from journals related to sociology or cultural anthropology.
